Goal:
Students will identify location of ordered pairs on a coordinate plane.
Materials:
- Coordinate Plane Worksheet
- Cereal that contains marshmallow shapes
Procedure:
Explain to the students that an important component of successful military operations is to determine location.
Place a copy of the worksheet on the Digital Visual Presenter/Document Camera.
Review with the students that they must first travel along the x axis and then along the y axis to determine the location of ordered pairs.
Model how to identify location using the ordered pairs listed:
(-3, 5) (4, -8) (-7, -6) (12, -10)
Divide students into pairs. Distribute to each pair of students a handful of cereal that contains marshmallow shapes.
Distribute Coordinate Plane Worksheets.
Explain that one partner will place eight to ten shapes on the coordinate plane.
The other partner will list the names of each shape placed on the coordinate plane (heart, star, etc.) and its ordered pair.
After the students have had at least one turn to list the ordered pairs, explain that they will switch tasks.
The first partner will list eight to ten ordered pairs and the shape that should be placed at that point. The second partner will place the marshmallows on the location of the ordered pair created by their partner. Partners should then switch tasks.
Assessment:
Teachers should monitor pairs during the activity to ensure that students understand the concept.
