Time Capsules

Goal:

Students will research historic American figures and their contributions online.

Materials:

  • Computers
  • Shoeboxes
  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape
  • Crayon, marker, or colored pencils

Procedure:

After learning about several important historical American figures and their contributions, students may choose an American figure to research online individually or in groups.

After students record important facts about the American figure, they should think about items that represent this person.
Have students decorate their shoeboxes with crayons, markers, or colored pencils.

Students may tape or glue images of the historical figure or anything that represents that person.

Have students place eight to ten small artifacts that represent the contributions made by this person in their time capsule (shoe box).

Students will share the artifacts in their time capsules with the class and explain why the person they chose is a significant part of American history.

Assessment:

Teachers may choose to assign a report on the American figure chosen.
